Proper footwork puts you in the right place at the right time, reducing errors and making the game feel smoother. It also helps protect your body—poor movement often leads to awkward reaches, unnecessary strain, and even injuries. By learning to move efficiently, you’ll not only cover the court better but also conserve energy, allowing you to play longer and with more consistency.
Pickleball Footwork Drills to Try:
Here are a few simple yet effective pickleball footwork drills you can incorporate into your practice:
Split-Step Drill: Before every opponent’s shot, practice a small hop (the split step) to engage your legs and prepare to move in any direction. This drill helps improve reaction time and keeps you balanced. Coach Luke says: Keep that paddle out in front in a neutral position.
Side-to-Side Shuffle: Stand near the kitchen line and shuffle left to right, staying low and keeping your paddle up. This simulates quick adjustments during fast exchanges at the net. Coach Luke says: The lower you can get the better (but ensure you are in a comfortable position).
Crossover Step Drill: When covering wider shots, practice using a crossover step instead of multiple small steps. This saves time and keeps you from getting caught off balance.
Forward and Back Movement: Place cones or markers on the court and practice moving forward toward the kitchen line, then retreating to the baseline. This mimics real game scenarios and helps you learn how to adjust without overcommitting. Coach Luke says: Be careful moving back - turn side on and shuffle so you reduce the chances of tripping over backwards - safety first!
Move Smarter, Not Harder:
One of the most common mistakes beginners make is over-hustling. Running frantically for every ball often leads to rushed shots and fatigue. Instead, focus on anticipating where the ball is going and taking small, controlled steps to get there. Think of it as dancing on the court—your feet should always be active but never out of control. Coach Luke says: Keep on those toes!
